One of India's largest news agencies has sued OpenAI in a case that could set a precedent for how AI companies use copyrighted news content.

In a first, one of India’s largest news agencies has sued OpenAI for using its content to train its AI models without permission.

ANI in its filing said that OpenAI has "refused to obtain a lawful license or permission" for the use of original works by ANI. The AI firm has entered into licensing arrangements

Multiple news publications across the world have sued OpenAI and other AI firms including Microsoft and Perplexity for violating their copyright

The Delhi High Court summoned OpenAI after ANI filed a lawsuit alleging unauthorised use of its content to train ChatGPT. ANI's counsel claimed that blocking their website doesn't prevent content reproduction across other media.

The court did not pass any injunction in favor of ANI, noting that the case is the first of its kind and is complex, requiring further deliberation. The court will further hear the matter in January.
