ROME (AP) — Pope Francis said Donald Trump’s plans to impose mass deportations of immigrants would be a “disgrace,” as he weighed in on the incoming U.S. president’s pledges nearly a decade after calling him “not Christian” for wanting to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border.

Trump has vowed that mass deportation will be a day-one priority, saying he has “no choice” but to deport anyone who is in the U.S. illegally.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is pulling out all the stops to support the roughly 5 million undocumented Mexicans living in the U.S.

This comes after Francis appointed Cardinal Robert McElroy to be the next Archbishop of Washington, D.C. McElroy is a staunch opponent of mass deportations, calling them “inconsistent with Catholic doctrine,” CNN reports.

As Donald Trump vows to launch a mass deportation, Catholic churches and legal aid groups are gearing up to defend the nation’s undocumented.

Many immigrant advocacy groups in the city and suburbs have been reaching out to undocumented immigrants ahead of Trump's inauguration, in an effort to get ready for what might be coming.
