Microsoft is creating a new engineering division, led by the former global head of engineering at Facebook (now Meta), that will be responsible for building fundamental AI technologies and tools for the company.

The Redmond-headquartered company has been retooling its AI divisions over the past year, hiring former Inflection CEO Mustafa Suleyman to head Microsoft AI, which oversees the company’s AI-powered Copilot organization and other consumer products. Former Inflection chief scientist Karén Simonyan also left the startup for Microsoft.

Microsoft has created a new CoreAI – Platform and Tools division today to better apprehend the “AI platform shift” it's been anticipating for more than two years.
