Californians asleep at around 2:45 a.m. Sunday were rattled awake by a magnitude 4.2 earthquake centered near the Central Coast.

AROMAS, Calif. (AP) — An earthquake registering magnitude 4.2 shook part of central California early Sunday, the United States Geological Survey reported. The earthquake was detected at 2:47 a.m. local time about 2 miles northwest of Aromas with a depth of 4.59 miles, the science agency said on its website and in a social media post.

A 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Aromas Sunday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake hit abut 1.8 miles north northwest of Aromas in Monterey County. It was felt at the KSBW studio in Salinas and callers into the newsroom from Freedom and Gilroy reported feeling it as well.

Saturday's earthquake was the seventh of magnitude 3 or greater since Sept. 12, when a magnitude 4.7 earthquake just north of Malibu was widely felt across Southern California.
