By bno - Chennai Office Ethnic violence between indigenous Chakma and Bengali communities has intensified in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, leading to the deaths of at least four minority men and injuring dozens more in the Khagrachhari and Rangamati districts.

The violence between Chakma tribals and Bengali settlers is the latest manifestation of the decades-old conflict.

The violence was sparked by the lynching of a Bengali man, triggering retaliatory attacks and protests calling for justice.

Rangamati is part of three districts making up Bangladesh’s only mountainous region, the Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) that were formerly known as the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Despite being a conflict-prone, restive area for decades, the family home had never been attacked before, Robin said.

The Bangladesh government will form a high-powered committee to investigate recent violence in the Chittagong hill tracts. A delegation will visit Khagrachhari and Rangamati, while officials urge cooperation to maintain peace.

The remote Chittagong Hill Tracts region that borders India and Myanmar has seen sporadic violence between tribal groups and newer Bengali-speaking arrivals from the plains over resources and access to land.
