The National Weather Service has put out a flurry of advisories due to the cold and potential for snow in Virginia.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Tuesday was a cold morning across West Virginia, but it wasn’t a record breaker. Officials with the National Weather Service in Charleston said Elkins came closest to breaking the record, but even there the old record low remained intact for January 20 and for the time being January 21.

Although the National Weather Service predicted that north central West Virginia would get snow on Sunday, some areas got even more than previously expected.

People and animals in West Virginia are experiencing extremely cold temperatures, with some areas dropping below zero degrees overnight.

Winds chills dropped below 10 degrees early Tuesday morning for most of the state, and Wednesday morning could be even colder.

Only three county school districts in West Virginia required students and faculty to travel to classrooms Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, as temperatures reached the single digits for many areas.

A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued for portions of Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland with dangerously low temperatures predicted.

The coldest day of the year for cities across West Virginia is in the same week of Jan. 20-26, with the exception of a few outliers, including Kumbrabrow, Randolph County and Alderson along the Greenbrier River which are the week before, and Franklin, Pendleton County and Lost River, Hardy County which are the week after.

Freezing arctic air is hanging around today, but forecasts for both southern West Virginia and Southwest Virginia are offering some relief as temperatures start to climb above freezing. Water freezes when temperatures dip to 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below.
