Canada marks the fourth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation today. The day is a time to honour and remember Indigenous children who died at residential schools, the survivors, their families and communities.

Monday marks National Truth and Reconciliation Day in the country, a statutory holiday observed on September 30 yearly. It was established to honour the survivors of residential schools and to recognize the ongoing impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous communities.

TORONTO — Ontario’s only First Nation representative at Queen’s Park plans to soon table proposed legislation, in his own Indigenous language, to have the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation declared a paid provincial holiday. The day is a federal statutory holiday, but not a provincial one in Ontario.

Since the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a federal statutory holiday, Government of Canada offices and buildings will be closed. This includes services like Canada Post, the Canada Revenue Agency, passport offices and Service Canada.

Memorials abound on the fourth National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada and in parts of the United States on Monday, Sept. 30. The federal holiday became official in 2021. Even the Canadian Football League is honoring the children who passed away in boarding schools as a way to never forget the horrors done to Native peoples during colonialism.

Red, orange leaves fell from trees as Indigenous and non-native people gathered in downtown Fredericton to mark Truth and Reconciliation Day. Indigenous attendees say they are heartened to see “allies” come together to mark the day and baby steps are being taken toward reconciliation but more needs to be done.
