The A's are leaving Oakland at the bidding of owner John Fisher. Las Vegas has committed public dollars to the construction of a new ballpark for the A's, but that partial funding will be secured only if Fisher is able to secure private financing for the rest of the stadium project.

The weird existence of the franchise formerly known as the Oakland Athletics has officially begun.The A's took the first step in walking away from their glorious Oakland history — which included four World Series championships — by issuing "new brand guidelines" to the media on what the team should be called now that it is saying goodbye to 57 MLB seasons in the East Bay and moving to a temporary home in Sacramento.

Flashback: This is the third time the A’s are moving in their history. The franchise was launched as the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901 and moved to Kansas City in 1955 before heading to Oakland in 1968.

The Athletics are Oakland’s no more. With the 2024 MLB season behind it, the Athletics have officially dropped the city from their team name. The team will go by just the Athletics or A’s, starting Monday, when they play three seasons in West Sacramento at the Triple-A Sutter Health Park, the A’s announced in a statement Monday.

The A’s are officially dropping Oakland from their name, and the ballclub is making sure everyone knows just what they want to be called. In a note on Monday, the team made sure to specify just how people should be referring to them,
